This exhibition video was created for UKIYO-E IN PLAY, held at the Hyokeikan of the Tokyo National Museum from April 22 to June 15, 2025. The series consists of 17 videos. Shown alongside the exhibited works, the videos convey the exquisite techniques of the craftsmen who created them, the trial and error involved in the production process, and the artists’ thoughts and intentions. The prints themselves were deliberately omitted from the videos so that visitors could appreciate the original works on display.

Fuka Akimoto is a lacquer tapper in Ninohe, Iwate Prefecture. Five years ago, she moved from Tokyo to Joboji, Ninohe, as a Local Vitalization Cooperator. From June to October, she harvests urushi, while in the off-season, she studies blacksmithing to make the tools used in lacquer tapping. She has taken on the dual roles of lacquer tapper and tool blacksmith—a challenge no one has attempted before. This film follows her journey up close.

Haruto becomes a shut-in after entering university. Worried about his future, his mother, Sonoko, gathers the courage to seek help from a support group called Nojigiku-kai. Through video games, Haruto reconnects with Itsuki, a former middle school classmate, and gradually starts to heal. However, his father Seigo’s words and misunderstandings with Itsuki cause him to withdraw again. Still, when Haruto learns that Itsuki also has a history of social withdrawal, he is moved to take a step forward.

While returning from a sales call in a company car, office worker Kurata spots his old friend Fujiki and calls out to him. The two go into a restaurant and share drinks. After helping a drunken Fujiki outside, Kurata seats him in the passenger seat and drives off, then runs over and kills a man. Kurata’s company goes bankrupt, and Fujiki’s life is thrown into turmoil. Kurata is sent to prison and, after his release, apologizes to the victim’s now-grown daughter. He remains haunted by profound, irreversible regret.

Dr. Takashi Mizuno of Towada City Hospital in Aomori Prefecture became a doctor late in life, entering medical school at 55 and earning his license at 60. He was inspired by a newspaper article about a physician in Miyagi Prefecture who became a doctor at 62. Despite the barriers posed by his age, Mizuno devotes himself to providing medical care to patients in their homes. This film follows him over the next decade as he strives to follow in the footsteps of the doctor who inspired him.

At Hodoji Temple, Ryugen Matsunami engages in Buddhist dialogue. Inspired by the Buddha’s teaching to “walk alone like a rhinoceros,” he seeks a philosophy for saving oneself and putting it into practice in society. A young woman uses social media to share ways of facing one’s inner self with her peers; a farmer shares the richness of life through a community farm; and a former IT executive shares ways to cultivate the intellect with businesspeople grappling with corporate management in the digital age.

生き物達が様々な擬態をするのは、自分が棲む環境の中で他の生き物達との関係にうまく適応して生き残り、子孫を残すため。身近な里山の生き物達の興味深い擬態を追った。

Animals exhibit various form of mimicry to adapt to their environments, survive by navigating their relationships with other organisms, and reproduce. Rather than deliberately imitating anything, they have gradually evolved over generations, surviving to this day through this long process. This documentary aims to help viewers, including local residents, rediscover the airport’s history as it approaches its 100th anniversary and build excitement for the milestone. It traces the airport’s evolution from the construction of its original airfield to its development into an international airport, conveying the hardships and passion of each era. The first “Hokkai” aircraft was recreated in CG as accurately as possible based on historical records, while location filming vividly captures the villagers’ collective efforts to build the airfield and their joy at the aircraft’s landing.

Drawing on archival footage documenting the grueling construction of the Kurobe Dam and rare testimonies from miners who worked in its notoriously hot tunnels, this film sheds light on the little-known migrant labor group known as the “Bungo Dokko,” whose work helped support Japan’s postwar reconstruction and rapid economic growth. Through footage of the group’s birthplace, Kamiura in Saiki City, historical photographs, and interviews with researchers, the film traces the group’s origins and explores the historical and contemporary significance of its legacy in social infrastructure development.

Political scientist and music critic Morihide Katayama visits people and places connected to wartime songs, uncovering the realities of musicians’ lives and society at the time. Drawing on 253 wartime musical scores and surviving broadcast records found in NHK’s archives, the film explores how music was used during the war. Newly discovered scores from the period were also recorded in the studio specifically for the film, bringing the music back to life through performances by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Eighty years after the war, with his father’s remains still unrecovered, Tsutomu travels to where his father died.

This film uses AI to portray Kansai Electric Power’ s founding in 1951 under GHQ, the formidable engineering challenge of building the Kurobe Dam, and the company’s role in overcoming power shortages during Japan’s rapid economic growth and supplying electricity to the 1970 Osaka Expo. Over approximately six months, monochrome archival materials were researched and collected, then enhanced, colorized, and animated using generative AI. The company’s founder, Shiro Otagaki, was recreated as an AI avatar from photographs and voice recordings to address current employees.
